Title
-
Detecting and recovering "hidden data" (MEng Masterclass)
-
Goal
-
Deliver lecture and lab on how encrypted files are recovered for digital forensics
-
Description
- Digital forensics seeks to recover data from a storage device, including file contents and associated metadata. In some cases, anti-forensics techniques might be used on the device that make data recovery more difficult. This includes overwriting data, modifying metadata (such as timestamps) and data hiding. Data hiding includes steganographic techniques that involving hiding data within legitimate data (such as within benign image, audio, or video files), as well as encrypting data. Digital forensics analysis needs to first detect data hiding, and then try to recover the hidden data. Such analysis first involves detecting the hidden data, and then using various techniques for data recovery. For encryption, for example, this could include memory searches, or brute force guessing of key material.
For this Masterclass you will create a lecture and lab on the detection and recovery of hidden data.
