Title

Predicting Body Composition from Photographs Using Machine Learning

Goal

Description

DEXA scans are the clinical gold standard for measuring body composition, but they are costly, involve radiation, and are impractical for frequent or large-scale use. This project explores whether machine learning models can estimate key body composition measures (e.g. fat mass, lean mass) using photographs instead of DEXA scans. Students will work with anonymised image data paired with DEXA-derived ground truth, applying computer vision and regression techniques to learn image–body composition relationships. The project emphasises non-invasive, human-centric AI and includes critical evaluation of accuracy, bias, and ethical considerations.
