Title
-
Machine Learning Approaches for Gait Analysis in Parkinson's Disease Using Wearable Sensor Data
-
Goal
-
To develop and evaluate machine learning models for classifying Parkinson's Disease severity and distinguishing PD patients from healthy controls based on gait parameters obtained from wearable sensors. If the project produces quality results, the goal is to publish a journal paper.
-
Description
- This project will utilize the Mobilise-D Technical Validation Study dataset, which includes gait data from individuals with Parkinson's Disease and healthy older adults. The dataset comprises measurements from wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) capturing various gait parameters. The student will preprocess the data, extract relevant features, and apply machine learning techniques to classify PD severity and differentiate between PD patients and healthy individuals. Performance metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score will be used to evaluate the models.

Background
-
Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms, including gait disturbances. Early and accurate assessment of gait impairments is crucial for diagnosis and monitoring disease progression. Wearable sensors offer a non-invasive means to collect detailed gait data in real-world settings. By applying machine learning algorithms to this data, it is possible to identify patterns indicative of PD and assess disease severity, potentially leading to improved diagnostic tools and personalized treatment strategies.
